Aquarium Keeping Tips

We had a brainstorm and came up with these tips for keeping aquariums. To talk to an expert about aquarium keeping please call 08456 589 599

  1. To maintain biological activity in the filter always clean media in a bucket of aquarium water and not in tap water, as chlorine will kill off beneficial bacteria.
  2. Feed herbivorous and omnivorous fish with vegetable supplements such as spirulina algae wafers, cucumber, courgette and Chinese lettuce leaves.
  3. Dechlorinate tap water and leave over night to get to room temperature before you perform water changes, therefore maintaining stable biological and temperature parameters.
  4. No matter how small the aquarium, a filtration and aeration system should always be installed.
  5. For reduction of algae in the tropical aquarium add Siamese Flying Fox Fish and/or Amano Shrimps. These are especially proficient algae eaters.
  6. When purchasing livestock always look out for the OATA (Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association) logo which proves the retailer meets a set of fish keeping standards.
  7. Always position your aquarium set up away from direct sunlight and household radiators, therefore avoiding algae blooms and temperature fluctuations.
  8. Stock your aquarium with surface, middle and bottom dwelling fish, to give an evenly balanced appearance.
  9. Aquarium plants ideally require fertilisation additives and the addition of CO2 if they are to thrive.
  10. Research compatibility and the environmental needs i.e. pH, temperature etc. of the fish you wish to purchase.
