What conditions should be avoided when building a garden pond?

Paul was under instruction from the lady of the house to buld a garden pond. He had all the tools and Butyl Liner and the pond was set for completion in Summer 2006 but Paul felt there was a problem with the location. It was regularly water logged. It was assumed a garden pond would solve the problem but Paul wasn't so sure. He had heard that you shouldnt build a pond in water logged areas. He wanted to know why he should avoid it but also if there were any alternative solutions.

Advice from Swell

Yes it is true areas like this should definitely be avoided. If a pond is constructed below a high water table, water can build up under the liner and cause a floating liner effect. Also due to the water logged conditions the side walls of the pond might not be strong enough and could be compromised. Swell strongly recommend avoiding this area but you could try building a raised pond with adequate foundations.

Another solution is to breeze block line the pond which will provide strength for the sides. Back fill at least a couple of foot behind the walls and below the pond with a suitable drainage material. Remember this material and the blocks could have sharp edges so use a professional geo-textile underlay before installing your liner.
