Which Pond Filter?

Pond Filter Sizing Chart & Pond Water Volume Calculator

Choosing a pond filter can be a confusing process as there are hundreds of pond filter types available in the UK market.

Pond filters come in a vast range of types, shapes and sizes making the process of choosing the correct one confusing. Choosing the correct pond filter is however very important for the long term health of you garden pond.

Pond filters are one of the most important pieces of equipment and possibly the most expensive you will buy for your garden pond, so choose correctly the first time.

Pond filters are split up into several categories.

In Pond Filters:

All-In-One pump, filter and Ultra Violet combination units are ideal for small garden ponds and water features. They are very easy to install and maintain. There are several available such as the Hozelock Easyclear 3000 and Oase Filtral 2500.

The full range can be found at our In-Pond Filter page.

Pressurised Pond Filters:

Pressure pond filters are extremely popular for small to medium sized ponds. They are ideal as the filter can be buried in the ground which keeps the filter out of sight. Pressure filters can be easy to maintain as many have built in self-cleaning devices such as the Oase Filtoclear and Fish Mate Powerclenz.

The full range can be found at our Pressurised Pond Filter page.

Pond Bio Filters:

Biological Pond filters are basically designed for keeping the pond healthy and free from debris. They do not include an Ultra Violet clarifier which controls green water. Bio Pond Filters can be added to an existing system as a biological boost or used in conjunction with a separate Ultra Violet filter.

Biological pond filters such as the Oase Biotec 10.1 and Hozelock Ecocel are excellent quality and ideal additions for your garden pond.

The full range can be found at our Pond Bio Filter page.

Pond Bio Filter & UV Combinations:

All in one filter systems are the most commonly purchased garden pond filters at Swell UK. They are perfect for most small to large ponds as they come complete with Biological filter box and built in Ultra Violet Clarifier.

The Bio and Filter UV combination filters are easy to install and maintain. These filters have to be positioned above the pond water level or at the top of a waterfall or stream.

Certain filters combination such as the Blagdon Midipond 14000 and Fish Mate 10000 are excellent sellers.

The full range can be found at our Bio and Filter UV combination filters page.

Pump & Filter Kits:

Buying a Pump and Filter Kit is probably the easiest way to choose your system. They are chosen by the manufacture as components that will work together for a specific sized pond. The kits are available with either Pressurised Pond Filters or a Bio-UV Pond Filter combined with a submersible pond pump.

The Oase Biosmart 24000 filter kit is an excellent example of a complete pond system. It is easy to install and maintain.

Buying a Pump & Filter Kit takes away the difficult process of choosing the individual pump and filter components.

The full range can be found at our Pump & Filter Kits page.

Ultra Violet Clarifiers:

Ultra Violet Clarifiers (UVC’s) are an essential part of the pond filter system if you wish to achieve clear water. An ultra violet tube held within the UVC unit clumps algae cells together into lumps which are easily removed by mechanical filtration i.e. filter foams.

Always use a Bio Filter in conjunction with a UVC.

The majority of filter systems come with a built in UVC such as the Hozelock Ecopower + or Oase Biopress.

Ensure UV bulbs are replaced every spring as their effectiveness at controlling algae deteriorates over time.

The full range can be found at our Ultra Violet Clarifiers page.

Blanket Weed Control:

Blanketweed is a common problem in ponds. This string like algae clings to the side of your pond, clogs plants and can be a nuisance if not controlled.

It can be very difficult to control blanketweed in a pond and treating with an algicide is sometimes not the best solution. Killing the blanketweed will only pollute the pond, de-oxygenate the water and it will grow back within weeks.

Swell UK suggest using a biological supplement such as Swell Control Blanketweed, which with ongoing addition to the pond will starve the Blanket Weed of its nutrients and thus controlling it without harming wildlife etc.

Other successful devices that can be used on a pond are the Blagdon Blanketweed Controller and the Velda I-Tronic. The Blagdon Blanketweed Controller distortes the salt concentration of the water and thus sarves the algae of its food. The Velda I-Tronic adds a low solution of copper to the water and thus kills the Blanketweed, by keeping the copper in solution it will not grow back. This is the most effective way of controlling Blanketweed.
