Help and advice on shopping for: Aquarium Filters

The ultimate cleaning solution for your aquarium

Remove toxins, waste and other solids from your fish tank with our high-quality fish tank filters. Whether you're after an internal filter to sit inside your aquarium or an external filter to sit outside, there is a wide variety to choose from. Swell UK’s range of fish tank filters includes leading brands like Aqua One, AquaEl, Eheim and Oase.

What are fish tank filters?

A fish tank filter is essential to keep your fish tank running smoothly, whether it's a tropical paradise or a freshwater setup. The purpose of a filter is to remove excess food, decaying matter, dangerous chemicals and fish waste products from the water.

Why should I buy fish tank filters?

Filters reduce the number of water changes and the amount of maintenance needed as you’ll have a cleaner tank for longer. If waste and debris are not removed, not only will your tank look dirty, there can also be a build-up of toxins that can be harmful to your aquarium inhabitants.

What are the main types of fish tank filters?

Our fish tank filters range can be split into four subcategories; external filters, filter spares & accessories, fleece filters and internal filters. External filters sit outside of your aquarium and must-have aquarium water brought to and from them through tubing. Filter spares & accessories are made up of miscellaneous parts for the maintenance of fish tank filters as well as the tubing required for external filters. Fleece filters are water polishers that remove large solids by straining them through fine fleece. Finally, internal filters are filters designed to sit within your aquarium, constantly filtering the water.

What should I look for?

When choosing a filter there are a lot of different things to consider, we recommend ensuring that the flow rate of your filter is enough to regularly filter your entire tank. Beyond flow rate, try to plan out where you want to place your filter, this will help you work out what accessories you’ll need and which models are suitable for you and your tank.
