Choosing a Water Feature for your Garden

You’ve worked hard on your garden and you take great pride in the aesthetic value that it adds to your landscape. With all of that hard work and dedication in place, there’s no doubt that you want to ensure that the water feature that you implement will continue that design criteria. Here are a few tips that can help you choose the right water feature for your garden.

First and foremost, consider your tastes. This is, after all, your personal space and your sanctuary. It doesn’t matter if something looks "right" or "in place" if it’s not pleasing to you. So when you are planning your water feature, make sure that it’s something that you really want and not what you have read or heard will look great. Additionally, consider your visitors. Do you regularly have children at your home or is it somewhere that adults converge more? Do you have pets that will take an unwanted interest?

Take a close look at your home and the natural surroundings. Is your house a modern structure or is it more traditional? Does it snow or at least get below freezing for much of the winter or are you fortunate enough to miss most of the frost each year?

Once you have answered these questions, you will have a better understanding of the kinds of water features that will be right for your garden. Here are a few styles to consider:

  1. Formal gardens tend to have a more geometric design and utilise lots of symmetry that concentrate on a single focal point; Many times, this is the water feature that act as a centerpiece. Suitable water features for the formal garden include fountains with sprayers, geometrically-shaped ponds, bird baths, and even stone fountains in which the stones are arranged in symmetrical patterns.
  2. Tropical gardens are full of lush plants that are allowed to overgrow in order to further illuminate their natural beauty. There is usually a great deal of color, broad leaves, and large flowers to cool the senses during long, hot summer months. Some water features that work well in tropical gardens include small streams, reflection ponds, small natural ponds and water walls.
  3. Contemporary gardens are not so much minimalistic as they are prudent in their spacing. The contemporary garden is well laid-out with a great deal of attention to detail so it is important that the water feature isn’t overbearing on the scenery that surrounds it. Small reflection pools, contemporarily-designed bird baths, and geometrically inspired water walls fit well within the contemporary garden. The contemporary garden is often a subtle mix of old and new, so owners of such gardens can also experiment with antique water fountains.
