Although it is fair to say that tropical fish should be used to tropical weather, having your fish tank get too warm can have some disastrous effects on it’s inhabitants. Here are some tips to keep your aquariums temperature down.
- Invest in a good Aquarium temperature controller
- Is your aquarium surrounded by electrical equipment such as televisions of stereos? If so, try moving these objects away from the tank.
- Is your aquarium located close to a wall or boxed in using shelving? Air is a wonderful insulator against heat, keeping your aquarium well ventilated will prevent the water temperature from rising.
- Is your aquarium light well ventilated? Providing vents in the tank hood can allow the hot air near the light bulb to seep away keeping you tank cool.
- Consider investing in a fan or air conditioning unit (especially during the summer months). Although they can be expensive to run, keeping the room cool will help to keep the temperature of the aquarium down.
- Salt Water aquariums can be fitted with aquarium coolers that can reduce the temperature of the water. These cooling devices work much like the fish tank filter in that they run almost all the time and process the water.
- If possible, you could move the aquarium to a darkened room or basement, away from direct sunlight and the trappings of modern living. Although not an ideal solution for viewing, your fish will thank you for spending a few months of the year in a cooler environment!
