Proper equipment, including a quality tank, pump, filters, heaters, lights and accessories.

Food. It's important to make sure you are feeding your fish a proper diet. Never over feed!
Information and supplies on maintaining the correct water levels for things like pH, ammonia, nitrates, etc.
Test kit for water quality.
Fish! Be sure you buy from a reputable source and that the fish and marine life you bring home are in a healthy state.
Keen enthusiasm for interesting fish and marine life.
Responsibility. If you don't have a passion for aquariums and care for yours diligently, the animals are the ones that will suffer.
