1/ De-algae the glass with an appropriate algae removing implement. Be careful not to get any sand or gravel caught in your cleaning device, as this will scratch your aquarium glass or acrylic.
2/ Carry out a 10-15% water change using a siphon gravel-cleaning device removing as much waste material from the bottom as possible. Never change more than 25% of your aquarium water at any one time as this could have adverse effects on your water chemistry and the performance of your filter. When replacing water always use a tap water conditioner to remove chemicals that could harm your fish or friendly filter bacterial colonies.
3/ Finally remove filter medias and clean in the aquarium water you have removed. Never clean filter media in fresh tap water or under the running tap as the chlorine kills of filter bacteria which can be detrimental to the performance of your filter and can lead to water quality problems and the death of aquarium inhabitants.
