Power heads, surge pumps and wave makers should always be installed in a reef aquarium. Please note strong flow should never be directed at invertebrates always try to direct currents around the tank.
Strong current, wave and surge actions are not only for aesthetic reasons they serve to stir up detritus, preventing the formation of dead spots allowing mechanical filtration to work more efficiently.
When there is a high turn over rate of water at the surface due to increased movement, gas exchange is more efficient therefore elevating oxygen levels and lowering nitrogen levels.
Strong currents also help to carry nutrients to invertebrates increasing their growth, vitality and the general well being.
