The ceramic media included plays a very important part of your aquarium as it encourages beneficial bacteria to live in and on its porous surfaces. Beneficial bacteria is created naturally in your tank, but you could choose to add a bacteria booster if you wish. The benefits of helpful bacteria is that they help to break down the ammonia and nitrite in your aquarium and so it is recommended that you do not remove the ceramic media or rinse with tap water as this could destroy the bacteria and effect the water quality in your aquarium.
