July 2007
This week saw the launch of the world’s first broadband site dedicated to showing the films of NGO’s, community film makers and environmental activists.
Green.tv is the youTube of environmental issues, showing films about air, land, water, climate change, technology, people and (endangered) species. Much like youTube the films and movie clips are streamed in real time to the users web browser so that they can watch an assortment of films instantly.
The channel is showing films from a number of conservational societies and groups including:
The purpose of the site, much like the recent Live Earth Music events, is to raise awareness of climate change and environmental issues.
Current film highlights include Razorlight’s front man Johnny Borrell singing for Friends of the Earth, a film encouraging each and everyone one of us to cycle more in order to reduce road congestion and road pollution, and a clip from Friend’s provident about their ethical investment portfolios.
Although Green.tv is unlikely to reach the same mass market appeal as youTube, the launch shows a conscious decision by Greenpeace (and other investors) to try and educate internet users about climate change in an easy to digest, easy to understand format.
