The RHS has asked people to support birds over the winter.
It is currently particularly important for homeowners to support birds in their gardens, as they can struggle during the winter. This is according to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), which recommends providing the animals with water in a bird bath or other shallow container.
If it frosts over, people should de-ice it so birds can continue to access the water, which they need throughout the year for bathing and drinking.
A pond heater can be used to melt ice in ponds, which will support the health of fish by allowing gases to enter and exit the water, while providing a source of liquid for wildlife, the RHS suggests.
Solar powered bird baths, which are often resistant to both frost and UV lighting, can supply birds with water throughout the year.
Foodstuffs with a high fat content should also be provided to the animals during the winter months, the RHS claims.
