During the winter gases produced from decomposition cannot escape through the closed sheet of ice covering the pond.
This causes poisoning and hence endangers the life of the pond inhabitants, furthermore the lack of contact with the atmosphere causes an acute lack of oxygen in the pond water.
The 2 piece Ice Preventer contains 3 air chambers which can be weighted down with sand, when in place it ensures that the pond surface does not freeze completely allowing gases exchange to take place.
