Blagdon InPond Ceramic Filter Media

Blagdon Ceramic Biological Filter Media is excellent for filtration because the ceramic rings have good surface area to collect bacteria and the holes allow the water to flow. The media is supplied in a handy mesh bag, four bags in total are provided. These bags of media can simply be used in the Blagdon InPond pump and filter system. It can also be used in almost any filter system.

It has been specifically designed to provide a chemically inert, high surface area media with extreme porosity.

Biological filter media is used within pond filter systems to provide a surface area that bacteria can live on.  These bacteria feed off the waste toxic chemicals produced by fish ammonia and nitrite and quickly turn them into relatively harmless nitrates.

The surface area is significant because this is effectively the size of the home available for bacteria to live and grow. The larger this area the better.

Pond filters have a limited space dedicated to Biological media, the more surface area the biological media can provide within this space, the greater the fish population the filter will healthily maintain.

Bacteria are living organisms; the species that do the work of keeping pond water healthy require water and oxygen levels similar to the fish in the pond.  Up to one third of the oxygen used in a pond can be consumed by filtration bacteria.

The space inside a porous filter media that creates a high surface therefore must be supplied with a flow of water and oxygen in order for them to support bacterial colonies on their surfaces,

The flow of water is allowed if the spaces are large enough and interconnected within the media giving it good porosity.
