Pond Ice Prevention
The winter months can bring problems for fish keepers. Winter frosts can cause ponds to freeze.
SwellUK has the following advice to prevent ice forming on ponds as well as what to do should the pond freeze over:
Cover the pond with suitable framework. Bubble wrap, sheeting or polystyrene make suitable insulators
Install a pond ice preventor or pond heater to keep an area clear for oxygenation
Should ice form on the top of a pond fill an empty can with boiling water and sit it on the ice to thaw
Do not under any circumstances break the ice if formed as this can send shock waves through the water resulting in fish fatalities.
