Help and advice on shopping for: Aquarium Lighting and Electricals

What are aquarium lighting and electricals?

Aquarium lighting and electricals are a broad category of products made up of all the hardware necessary to run an aquarium. All of our lighting and electricals require connection to a mains power supply, however, most are designed to be as efficient and energy-saving as possible so there’s no need to worry about power consumption.

How can lighting and electricals improve my aquarium?

Lighting and electricals are critical to running an aquarium. The right lighting helps to stimulate fish and improve their colouration, while heating and cooling is key to their overall health. Air pumps ensure your fish receive plenty of oxygen to breathe while UV sterilisers and aquarium controllers maintain the water quality. All in all, while you can run some aquariums without every type of lighting and electrical, you will need at least some to maintain the health of your fish and ensure they thrive.

Which lighting and electricals do I need for my fish tank?

Each aquarium will need a slightly different set of electrical hardware depending on its shape, size and inhabitants. If you’re keeping a freshwater aquarium you will need an air pump and some form of filtration, tropical tanks require heaters as well and marine tanks might even go as far as wavemakers and chemical control systems. Aquarium lighting, while rarely a necessity, is a fantastic addition that easily gives your aquarium a professional finish. In general, the bigger the aquarium, the larger and more powerful the hardware you will need.

Is it safe to use electrical hardware in my fish tank?

While it’s completely understandable to be wary of using electrical hardware with water, any hardware that’s meant to be used in water is carefully checked and waterproofed with multiple safety features to ensure the safety of both you and your fish. As long as you carefully read the instructions of any hardware before using it, aquarium electricals are just as safe as any other electricals.

What should I look for when buying lighting and electricals?

When it comes to lighting and electricals, the most important thing is to look at the energy efficiency of each product. Ensure that you will be comfortable running the product as it can become costly when you have multiple pieces of hardware running constantly - even when they are efficient and energy-saving.
