Common Goldfish
Help and advice on shopping for: Common Goldfish
What are Goldfish?
There are few fish more recognisable than Goldfish. These colourful freshwater fish are the most popular fish in the fishkeeping hobby and are kept as pets all over the world. They are a small variety of Carp and therefore close cousins of Koi Carp. Like their cousins, they come in many different varieties and colours, from red to black. Some varieties, particularly Fancy Goldfish, are selectively bred for their colours, patterns, and interesting body shapes.
How long do Goldfish live for?
If given the proper care, Goldfish can live well into their 20s! The common varieties, known for their short(ish) fins and slender bodies, often live longer than selectively bred Fancy Goldfish. These common varieties can also be kept outside in garden ponds, as well as indoors in fish tanks. To ensure that they live long and healthy lives, do not keep them in small goldfish bowls. Instead, keep them in a large aquarium (>115L) or a small garden pond equipped with a quality filter.
How big do Goldfish get?
While they don’t grow quite as large as other varieties of Carp, Goldfish can still grow to sizes of around 30cm. For optimal growth, Goldfish should be fed a varied and balanced diet consisting of foods high in both protein and fat. We sell a variety of Goldfish-specific food that not only promotes growth, but enhances colours and improves your fish’s immune system.
What fish can live with Goldfish?
As peaceful fish, Goldfish can live with many other types of peaceful pond fish, like Koi Carp, Orfe, Roach, and Rudd. They can live alongside peaceful fish more commonly found in aquariums too, like Zebra Danios and White Cloud Minnows. Since Goldfish prefer cool water temperatures, it’s best to keep them alongside fish that also thrive in cool water.
