Help and advice on shopping for: Tropical Fish Tanks

Build a vibrant tropical aquarium

Tropical tanks are designed to house a range of freshwater fish, including Cichlids, Tetras, Bettas, and many more species. These tanks come in a large selection of sizes, shapes, and even kits, so you can find the perfect aquarium for your living space.

Which aquarium should I choose?

There are many things to consider when choosing your fish tank, including the size, shape, and what it comes with. Many tropical fish tanks include LED lighting, a heater, filter, and cabinet, but some fish keepers choose tanks without equipment for a custom setup. Some of our tanks, especially larger ones, also include a matching cabinet, perfect for safely housing your tank and with shelves for equipment.

The size of your aquarium depends on your available space and the species of fish you want to keep. It's important to research the recommended tank size and compatibility for any livestock you want to house.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to set up a tropical aquarium

Aside from the fish tank and suitable cabinet, you will need a filter, heater, lighting, dechlorinator, substrate, and decorations or plants. Once filled, be sure to fully cycle your tank before adding any livestock for safe water conditions.

What temperature should a tropical fish tank be?

The temperature of your aquarium depends on the species you are keeping. Most aquarium heaters come pre-set to 25°C, which is the recommended average temperature for a tropical setup, although some species such as Discus require higher temperatures around 28°C ideally. Pair one of our aquarium heaters with a fish tank to maintain tropical conditions year-round.

How to choose tropical fish for an aquarium

The best way to stock an aquarium is across the zones of the tank, choosing bottom dwelling fish as well as mid water fish. Community aquariums (tanks with a mix of species) are popular thanks to their constant movement, although some species can be kept solitary. We recommend to always mix peaceful species, as aggressive or predatory fish will prey on small species.

What plants are best for a tropical aquarium?

The best plants for tropical setups are ones that thrive in warmer temperatures, and can handle low or medium levels of light. The most popular choices are Anubias, Java Fern, Cryptocorne, and Sessiliflora. These plants are more resilient to beginner errors, and create a varied display in your tank. For less maintenance, you may want to consider plastic or silk artificial plants.
