Help and advice on shopping for: Aquarium Filtration and Water Quality

Create the perfect aquatic habitat

Filtration and water quality products are critical to the safety of all aquatic life in your aquarium. We stock a wide variety of hardware tests and treatments to improve water quality within your aquarium. In our range, you’ll find products from top aquatic brands including Oase, Aqua One and Eheim.

What are filtration and water quality products?

While we say that an aquarium is filled with water there’s a lot more to it than that. Regular ‘H2O’ makes up the majority of the liquid within your tank but there are many chemicals that can enter via the water used to fill the tank, waste from the creatures living in the tank or even just the air exposed to the tank. Filtration and water quality products help aquarists to get a better look at what’s in their water, remove anything toxic or harmful and add in helpful minerals that support the growth of aquatic life.

Why should I buy filtration and water quality products?

The water in a fish tank is like the air that humans breathe. If our air became polluted or filled with toxins it could get us sick and the same goes for water and fish. The only way to protect fish from bad water is through regular testing and chemical maintenance. Lots of filtration and water quality products help to make both testing and chemical maintenance easier, so you can spend less time worrying about water chemistry and more time enjoying your spectacular aquarium.

What are the main types of filtration and water quality products?

We sell seven types of filtration and water quality products; fish tank filters, filter media, pumps and powerheads, test kits, RO units, protein skimmers and aquarium reactors. Fish tank filters are simply a pump with filter media embedded within it, they are the most common form of aquarium filtration. Filter media is the material that goes inside a fish tank filter. Pumps and powerheads are used to create flow in a fish tank, often moving water from one place to another. Test kits are chemical kits used to detect the presence of toxins or waste material within your water. RO units use a special process called reverse osmosis to purify water within an aquarium. Protein skimmers are specialist devices that use a constant stream of bubbles to remove waste protein within your aquarium. Finally, aquarium reactors are used to steadily add chemicals to your water, changing its chemical make-up.

What should I look for?

When it comes to filtration and water quality, we recommend the regular use of test kits to check what is present in your water. Once you know there is too much or too little of something you can then set about buying whatever hardware or treatment is necessary to correct it.
