Help and advice on shopping for: Pearlscales

What are pearlscale goldfish?

Pearlscales are a type of fancy goldfish characterised by their tennis ball-shaped bodies and pearlescent scales. It’s these scales that gives this distinct type of fancy goldfish their name. Like other types of fancy goldfish, pearlscale goldfish are bred for their distinctive shapes, patterns, and colours. They come in a wide variety of colours, from traditional red pearlscales and orange pearlscales, to uncommon chocolate pearlscales and calico pearlscales.

How big do pearlscale goldfish get?

Pearlscales are a relatively stout, short-finned type of fancy goldfish, so they don’t often grow quite as large as other, long-finned types, such as ryukin goldfish and telescope goldfish. That said, adults can still reach sizes of 15-20cm. This means that they need to be kept in relatively large aquariums, 100L at a minimum. If you’re planning to keep several pearlscale goldfish, follow the rule of 75-100L per fish. It’s also recommended that you equip your aquarium with a powerful filter, as pearscales produce a lot of waste!

What do pearlscale goldfish eat?

Like all goldfish, pearlscale goldfish are omnivorous and do best when fed a balanced diet made up of both animal matter and plant matter. To ensure your pearscale goldfish gets everything it needs, we recommend you offer them a variety of high-quality fish foods specially formulated for fancy goldfish. These foods are packed with vitamins, minerals, and trace elements that will boost your goldfish’s sizes, colours, and health.

How long do pearlscale goldfish live for?

While they don’t live for quite as long as common goldfish, pearlscales and other types of fancy goldfish can reach ages of 10-15 years provided they’re given the right care. There’s lots of information out there that’ll help you learn how to care for your pearlscale goldfish, including on our website. The most important things to consider are fish tank size (at least 100L per pearlscale goldfish), filtration (a powerful, external canister filter is most appropriate), and diet (offer a variety of specially formulated goldfish foods).
