Help and advice on shopping for: Coldwater & Pond

What are the best fish for garden ponds?

There are many different species you can choose for your pond, from small native species like Gudgeon and large exotic fish such as Koi Carp. Before stocking your pond with aquatic life, it's important to be sure you have adequate space for the species. It's also important to make sure you have suitable equipment to support the health of your fish, for example, Koi Carp are large, messy fish that require a powerful filtration system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which pond fish are easiest to care for?

For beginner pond keepers, we recommend starting out with hardy, peaceful and low-maintenance coldwater fish such as Goldfish and Loaches. We have many types of fish available, perfect for adding a splash of vibrant colour to your pond, and don't forget to check out our Tench for natural pond cleaning! Check out our beginners guide here.

What types of pond fish can live together?

There are a few things to consider when stocking multiple fish in a pond, such as feeding habits, size, and temperament. Some peaceful fish species include Goldfish varieties, Orfe, Tench and Loaches, as they are non-aggressive. In large ponds, you may even be able to accommodate Carps, Rudds, Roaches, Gudgeon and Barbels with non-aggressive species with caution.

We don't recommend mixing Sturgeon or Sterlets in a community pond as they struggle to compete for food. Pike and Perch are also not community fish, and will prey on Goldfish and small Orfe.

How many fish can I keep in my pond?

This depends on the species of fish you choose, as well as the size of your pond, for example, Koi fish need more space than Goldfish. It is generally recommended to follow these guidelines:

  • Goldfish: 1cm of fish for every 4L of water
  • Koi: 1cm of fish per 10-12L of water

For example, if your pond holds 1000L of water, you could roughly keep:

  • 250cm of Goldfish (eg: 10x 25cm fish)
  • 100cm of Koi (eg: 4x 25cm fish)
