Help and advice on shopping for: Self Contained Water Features

Self-contained water features combine garden decoration with the sight and sound of water. They can be placed anywhere indoors or outdoors and don’t need a pond or any extras to operate them. Just fill with water, plug in, and enjoy.

Do self-contained water features need an electricity supply?

Yes, most need to be within reach of an outdoor socket, and may also require a UK three-pin plug. UK electrical regulations mean that pond appliances can't be sold with a fitted plug, so these are sold separately. Solar-powered water features are also available, which don't plug in and instead use a small solar panel to power the inbuilt pump on bright, sunny days.

Can I put fish in a self-contained water feature?

No, they are too small to sustain any fish long-term and although they include a pump, they don't include a filter to convert toxic fish waste and keep them alive. Feature ponds can hold fish however as they are much larger and purpose-built to house them.

Are water features a lot of hassle to maintain?

Self-contained water features are small and easy to maintain. Tap water can be used to fill them and top them up, and water feature cleaners can be used to treat algae growth or to keep them free of algae altogether.

Can I put a self-contained water feature in my pond?

Self-contained water features don't need a pond and have their own tiny in-built reservoirs that the pump sits in instead. If you already have a pond and a pond pump and want a feature in your pond look for a waterfall, fountain, or a spitter garden water feature that isn't self-contained.

Can a water feature be used at night?

Self-contained fountains can be used day or night but if you want a focal point at night choose a water feature with LED lights built-in. A solar water feature won't work at night.
