Koi Carp
Help and advice on shopping for: Koi Carp
What are Koi Carp?
Koi Carp are a type of Carp prized for their vivid colours and striking patterns. They’ve been bred for their looks for hundreds of years. This has resulted in some truly stunning varieties, like Shusui Koi Carp, Ghost Koi Carp, and Kohaku Koi Carp.
How long do Koi Carp live?
If properly cared for, Koi Carp can live for decades. Most Koi Carp live for 25 to 35 years in captivity and grow to sizes of ~90cm. The oldest Koi Carp on record – a Japanese Koi Carp named Hanako – lived until the grand old age of 226!
What do Koi Carp eat?
Like their Wild Carp cousins, Koi Carp are omnivores that eat anything from worms and snails to plants. If you’re planning to keep Koi Carp in your garden pond, then you should try to replicate this varied diet with nutritious pond fish food.
A lot of pond fish food, like floating sticks and sinking pellets, can be fed year-round, but it’s also a good idea to supplement your Koi Carp’s diet with some wheatgerm foods during winter and high-protein growth foods during summer.
