What are pond UV bulbs?

UV bulbs are specialist bulbs used in pond filters and UV clarifiers to remove algae, one of the greatest challenges a pondkeeper will face in England and the UK. They combat algae by causing it to clump together, forming large pieces of algae that can then be easily removed by a standard pond filter. These bulbs over many benefits and are often the key to ensuring crystal clear water within your pond.

How long do UV bulbs last in ponds?

Most UV bulbs will last around 8 months to a year before they start to lose their efficiency. Generally, most pond keepers will replace their UV bulbs in spring, so they are at peak power in the summer months, when algae growth is most common. You can tell they are close to losing their efficacy when they start to discolour at the end of each tube, this is due to a process called solarization. Solarization is particularly obvious on bulbs that have been handled with bare hands, as the oils in your skin can block UV transfer and lead to increased polarization.

Do UV lights work for ponds?

Yes, UV lights have long been a tool used in both ponds and aquariums to maintain superb water quality. The benefit of UV light is that it can remove algae without adding any chemicals to the water or changing the water composition. Since blanketweed cells can't pass through a UV, UV clarifiers won't eradicate blanketweed, but can eradicate green water when maintained and installed correctly.

What size UV bulb do I need for my pond?

Most pond filters and UV clarifiers will clearly instruct you on the correct UV bulb needed for your pond equipment. However, the range tends to break down into four types of bulbs; T5, T8, PLL and PLS. Each of these bulbs comes in a range of wattages. When you look at your filter unit or previous bulb you should be looking out for these key details, you can normally find them near the registration number on the old bulb.
