Most UV bulbs will last around 8 months to a year before they start to lose their efficiency. Generally, most pond keepers will replace their UV bulbs in spring, so they are at peak power in the summer months, when algae growth is most common. You can tell they are close to losing their efficacy when they start to discolour at the end of each tube, this is due to a process called solarization. Solarization is particularly obvious on bulbs that have been handled with bare hands, as the oils in your skin can block UV transfer and lead to increased polarization.
