Ryukins
Help and advice on shopping for: Ryukins
What are ryukin goldfish?
Ryukins, also sometimes sold under the name fantail goldfish, are a type of fancy goldfish characterised by their long, flowing fins and distinctive shoulder hump. Like other types of fancy goldfish, they’re available in a wide range of colours and patterns, from iconic red ryukins to mottled calico ryukins. These fancy goldfish originated in Japan way back in the 18th century.
What do ryukin goldfish eat?
Like other types of fancy goldfish, ryukins aren’t at all picky and will chow down on anything you offer them, including blanched vegetables! We recommend that you feed your ryukin goldfish a balanced diet that includes both animal matter and plant matter. The best way to do this is by offering them high-quality fish food specially formulated for fancy goldfish. It’s also a good idea to occasionally fast your ryukin goldfish, as they are prone to obesity and digestive problems caused by overfeeding.
How big do ryukin goldfish get?
As a long-finned variety of fancy goldfish, ryukins grow larger than several other, short-finned varieties, such as ranchus. On average, adult ryukins reach sizes of 20-25cm. This means that they need to be kept in relatively large aquariums, 100L at a minimum. If you’re planning to keep several ryukins, or one ryukin and multiple other varieties of fancy goldfish, you should follow the rule of 75-100L per fish. You’ll also need to equip your aquarium with a powerful filter as fancy goldfish are very messy and produce a lot of waste!
How long do ryukin goldfish live for?
While they don’t live for quite as long as common goldfish, ryukins and other fancy goldfish can still reach ages of 10-15 years. To ensure your ryukin goldfish lives a long and happy life, you need to make sure it’s kept in a suitably sized and filtered environment, fed a diet of high-quality fish food, and given appropriate medicines if it ever falls ill.
