What is fish food?

Fish food can take a lot of different forms to appeal to a wide variety of fish species. Fish food is made up of all the nutrients that a fish needs to survive, this can include proteins, fats and even carbohydrates - just like human food. Lots of fish have evolved to eat in a certain way, whether it’s bottom-feeding or grabbing floating food, so there are lots of different types of food designed to behave in different ways in the water.

Why should I buy fish food?

If you’re running an aquarium with any type of aquatic life you will need fish food. However, there’s a big difference between just picking a random fish food and choosing the correct food for the species in your tank. With the right food for every species in your aquarium, you can ensure that every fish gets exactly what they need to flourish.

What are the main types of fish food?

We stock eleven types of fish food; Brine Shrimp hatcheries, Catfish food, Cichlid food, coldwater fish food, coral food, freeze-dried foods, fry food, holiday foods, marine fish food, tropical fish food and Turtle & Terrapin food. Brine Shrimp hatcheries are clumps of brine shrimp eggs that hatch providing your fish with live brine shrimp to eat. Catfish and Cichlid foods are each designed to meet the nutritional needs of a specific species. Coldwater fish food feeds a variety of species in a coldwater aquarium. Coral food is specially formulated to encourage the growth of corals and other invertebrates. Freeze-dried foods are live bugs and other prey that have been frozen to keep them fresh. Fry foods are designed to be eaten by baby fish, also known as fry. Holiday foods are large blocks of food that will feed your fish for weeks at a time while you’re away on holiday. Marine fish food caters to a wide range of marine fish while tropical fish food does the same for tropical fish. Finally, turtle & terrapin food has been designed for those specific aquatic reptiles.

What should I look for?

When buying fish food the key things to look out for are quantity and research. Research is the single best tool in the aquarist’s arsenal and when it comes to food it is vital, look up exactly what each of the species in your tank needs to survive and thrive then look for that type of food. Quantities are very important as well, you must be certain you have enough food to feed all of your fish regularly, we always recommend overbuying to ensure that you never run out of food.
