Help and advice on shopping for: Mixed Carp

What are Carp?

The term ‘Carp’ is a common name used to describe several large, freshwater fish commonly found in garden ponds, lakes, and rivers not only in the UK but around the world. There are many different types of Carp, from ornamental varieties like Koi Carp to wild varieties like Common Carp. Not all Carp look the same, but most varieties have bulky bodies, shiny scales, and delicate barbels.

Can you keep Carp in a garden pond?

Yes, Carp can be kept in a garden pond, provided you offer them enough space (at least 1,000L per Carp) and adequate pond filtration. As relatively peaceful fish, you can keep several Carp together and even alongside smaller fish, like Goldfish. Koi Carp are amongst the most popular Carp to keep in a garden pond, but there are several other suitable varieties such as Common Carp, Grass Carp, and Mirror Carp.

How long do Carp live for?

On average, Carp live for 20 years. It’s not uncommon, though, to hear of some Carp living well into their 30s. The oldest Carp on record, a Koi Carp named Hanako, lived for 226 years! To make sure your Carp lives a long and healthy life, make sure you provide it with a suitable environment and feed it a diet of high-quality pond fish food.

What do Carp eat?

Carp eat a variety of different foods. In the wild they eat anything from plants to insects, but if you’re keeping them in a garden pond it’s a good idea to feed them Carp-specific foods. These foods are packed with everything Carp need to grow and stay healthy.

Like several other types of pond fish, Carp slow down in winter and don’t need to eat quite as much food. They still need to eat something, however, and really benefit from foods high in wheatgerm during colder months.
