Why is manganese important for my marine aquarium?

Manganese is an important component of many enzymes involved in several essential metabolic processes. A lot of the complicated, biological activities that take place inside your reef tank couldn't happen without manganese.

Photosynthesis is perhaps the most important of these processes, especially with regards to corals. Manganese plays a big role in the photosynthetic cycle and, in turn, provides your corals with the proper nutrition they need to grow and flourish. Manganese specifically affects the red colouration of your corals and can mitigate any negative cellular effects that may be caused by thermal stress.

It's worth noting that the amount of manganese in seawater is typically very low, so low that it's not always detectable. This doesn't mean that it's not present, though; often it's there in tiny trace amounts. If your manganese levels are low - below the recommended base levels of 1 µg/L - then you may notice pale colours in your corals, as well as their polyps retracting.
