Help and advice on shopping for: Catfish Food

Promote your Catfish colour and vitality

Catfish are an amazingly diverse group, named of course after their cat-like whiskers. Known for being keen algae eaters, Catfish can benefit from food that includes high levels of vegetable matter and vitamin C to prevent stress and disease. We have a wide range of Catfish food from trusted brands like King British, Tetra and JBL.

What is catfish food?

Catfish are primarily omnivorous bottom feeders that feed at night. Catfish food comes in the form of wafers, tablets and sinking pellets. Nutritious and algae-based, they are all packed full of vegetable matter. Beyond this, they're highly digestible and have a low waste formula that contains all of the essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements that are required by catfish.

Why should I buy catfish food?

As bottom feeders, Catfish forage for their food in the gravel at the bottom of the fish tank. Born scavengers, they will eat any dead fish or plant matter they find there. As hopefully there won't be too much of that available in your aquarium, they must be fed sinking food. We sell scientifically formulated pellets with essential minerals and vitamins and protein levels to ensure cleaner, clearer water.

What are the main types of catfish food?

Catfish with fine, feathery barbles are adapted to feel for invertebrates so need suitably small foods sprinkled in and amongst the substrate for them to find and dine on. Feed a combination of fine, sinking granules with frozen foods little and often for these active fish. Catfish with wide mouths and very long, wide barbles are predators. Efficient in day or night, predatory catfish use those long barbles to scan the surroundings for prey, giving them a much bigger "view" than they would normally get. Large sinking pellets are ideal for predatory fish.

What features should you look out for when buying catfish food?

The first thing you need to consider is whether your fish is a herbivore, omnivore or carnivore as different breeds of fish have specialised digestive systems appropriate to their diet. Most Catfish are omnivores and eat food that sinks to the bottom of the tank, it's important that they are fed different types of food including algae, dried foods, pellets, and live foods. After that it's just a case of making sure that the food is safe for the sensitive barbels around their mouth and includes key elements that support and enhance growth.
