Help and advice on shopping for: Marine RO Units

Super effective water purification

RO units are otherwise called 'Reverse Osmosis Systems' and are the easiest way to provide your tank with water that is free from the chlorine, nitrates, phosphates and heavy metals that are present in tap water and can damage your aquarium’s delicate ecosystem. Our range of RO units includes products from leading brands like D&D, TMC and Tropical Marin.

What are RO units?

Reverse osmosis units are designed to remove the minerals found in tap water that, while beneficial to humans, are dangerous to many types of aquatic life. They slowly produce extremely pure water (also called RO water) which must then have a remineralising agent added to it, to give it the minerals suitable for marine life, before being added to your aquarium.

Why should I buy RO units?

Although RO units are quite costly and complex to set up, they completely protect your marine life from many common diseases, reduce algae growth and give you complete control over your aquatic environment. By using RO units and the right mineralising agent, you can ensure your fish flourish and save yourself many laborious maintenance tasks.

What are the main types of RO units?

Our RO units range is split into five categories; refill cartridges/membranes, remineralising additives, reverse osmosis systems, RO units pipework & fittings and TDS Monitors. Refill cartridges/membranes feature all the parts of RO units that may need to be swapped out to maintain their efficacy. Remineralising additives are all the fish-friendly minerals that need to be added to pure RO water. Reverse osmosis systems are the pieces of hardware used to perform reverse osmosis. RO units pipework & fittings are the various pieces of plumbing needed to connect your RO unit to your water tap and the rest of your watercourse. TDS monitors identify the number of solids at each point of your reverse osmosis system, so you can check that your RO unit is performing correctly and that you’re adding the right amount of remineralising additives.

What should I look for?

Successful installation and use of RO units take a lot of planning. We recommend fully researching RO units and planning how you will incorporate yours into both your tap water plumbing and aquarium before purchasing to avoid disappointment.
