What is the Swell Black Long-Spined Sea Urchin?
The Black Long-Spined Sea Urchin is an unusual animal that is an exceptional algae cleaner in tanks with aggressive fish. Whereas other invertebrates would be eaten, their long spines allow them to defend themselves against any fish that might want a nibble. You need to make sure that the tank you place them in has plenty of space for them to roam and make sure that there are lots of hiding places for them as well, such as live rocks. These Urchins can be very difficult to keep as they require a great deal of care, you need to make sure that they are acclimatised very carefully as a rapid change in the water quality can be very dangerous for your urchin and you need to make sure that you have excellent water at all times. While the spines on the Urchin are not venomous they are very sharp and can be painful if you touch them. It is normal for them to lose the occasional spine but if they start to lose a lot then it could mean your water quality isn't good and so you will need to improve it
