Help and advice on shopping for: Aquarium Chillers

Protect your fish from overheating

Aquarium chillers or coolers maintain the temperature of the water when hardware and sunlight are heating it up to ensure that fish are kept at the correct temperature. Easy to install and relatively energy-efficient, coolers are a fantastic addition to most fish tanks. Our range of coolers features a wide selection from top brand D&D.

What are aquarium chillers?

In order to keep your fish healthy and happy, it's important to regulate the temperature of your aquarium. Unlike humans and most animals, fish do not produce their own body heat and rely on the temperature of the water around them. In some cases, an aquarium cooler is needed to counteract outside sources of heat such as the sun or other aquarium hardware.

Why should I buy an aquarium chiller?

Aquarium chillers or coolers are a must if you have a lot of hardware in a tank or if it's in direct sunlight. If your tank isn't in direct sunlight and low on hardware it may still need a cooler as lots of different factors, such as home heating, can also affect the temperature of the water. Most aquarium coolers have a built-in thermostat and so will only activate if the temperature of the water starts to raise, ensuring that you only have to power the cooler when it's needed.

What are the main types of aquarium chillers?

We sell two types of aquarium coolers at Swell, cooling fans and chillers. Cooling fans sit above the water and maintain a constant stream of cold air across the surface, much like a regular domestic fan, they reduce the temperature of the water near the surface. Chillers take water out of the tank, cool it and return it into the aquarium creating a constant temperature across the entire tank. Each type is designed to suit different types of fish depending on their needs for a consistent temperature or a mixture of temperatures.

What should I look for?

When buying an aquarium chiller there are a lot of different factors to consider including the space it will need, how it will be wired into your tank and the amount of water the cooler can process. Both fans and chillers produce noise as well, so it's important to work out a noise-reduction solution - this might be placing a chiller in a closed cabinet or sealing a cooling fan beneath your aquarium's canopy.
