Help and advice on shopping for: Fish Tank Lights

Illuminate your aquatic world

Fish tank lighting is an imperative part of your tank setup. Of course, you want to be able to see the fish and other life in your fish tank, but the light is also important to the health of your fish and plants. Our range of fish tank lighting features top brands including Aqua One, Aquarium Systems and Juwel.

What is fish tank lighting?

Fish tank lighting is a range of electrical hardware designed to add light to any aquarium. Some lights are designed to sit above the water while others are designed to fit into a canopy. All lights are safe to be used in any aquarium and will pose no threat to your fish or aquatic life.

Why should I buy fish tank lighting?

Light is vital to the health of all life within your aquarium. Without the correct light, corals cannot survive even with the best treatments and food. In planted tanks, light is necessary for photosynthesis to occur. Without it, plants will fail to thrive and grow. Even fish need the natural rhythm that light creates to know when to rest or become more active, without it they will become stressed, which can cause disease.

What are the main types of fish tank lighting?

Swell UK’s fish tank lighting range is made up of nine types of lighting; compact bulbs, control units, LED lighting, light units, lighting accessories, reflectors, T5 light units, T5 tubes and T8 tubes. Compact bulbs are smaller bulbs designed for small aquariums. Control units are used to manage aquarium lighting and put it on a timer. LED lighting is energy efficient, power-saving lighting that produces less heat than traditional aquarium bulbs. Light units are self-contained lighting units designed to sit above an aquarium. Lighting accessories are a mix of miscellaneous add-ones that work alongside aquarium lighting to ensure it’s working at its best. Reflectors increase the amount of light reaching your aquarium from fluorescent bulbs. T5 light units are self-contained units designed to hold T5 bulbs. Finally, T5 and T8 bulbs are specific types of aquarium bulbs, with the T5 bulbs being slightly thinner than the T8 bulbs.

What should I look for?

It’s important to plan the phases of light and darkness in your tank. The best strategy is to emulate natural periods of light, with up to 12 hours of 'day' light and the same of darkness (depending on your setup). Not enough light can cause problems, too much can encourage the growth of algae and murky water. So it is important to get the balance just right.
