African Butterfly Fish Pantodon Buchholzi 5cm Overview: The African Butterfly Fish, scientifically known as Pantodon buchholzi, is a fascinating freshwater species prized for its unique appearance and surface-dwelling habits. With broad, wing-like pectoral fins and a flattened body, this fish resembles a butterfly, gliding gracefully at the water’s surface. Origin: Native to the slow-moving rivers, swamps, and floodplains of West and Central Africa, the African Butterfly Fish thrives in calm, heavily vegetated waters. Its natural habitat is rich in overhanging vegetation, which provides cover and hunting grounds for this ambush predator. Feeding: African Butterfly Fish are carnivorous and prefer a diet of live or frozen foods. They should be fed insects, small fish, and other meaty offerings such as bloodworms and brine shrimp. They may also accept floating pellets, but live prey best replicates their natural feeding behavior. Tank Mates: Due to their surface-dwelling nature and predatory instincts, African Butterfly Fish are best kept with peaceful, non-aggressive bottom and mid-level tank mates. Suitable companions include peaceful catfish, larger tetras, and other species that occupy lower levels of the tank. Avoid housing them with small fish that could be seen as prey or overly aggressive species that might harass them. Aggression: African Butterfly Fish are generally peaceful but can be territorial towards other surface-dwelling fish. They are solitary by nature and prefer to stay near the surface, waiting for prey to come within reach. They are unlikely to bother bottom or mid-level dwellers, making them suitable for a well-planned community tank. Experience Level: Intermediate. While relatively hardy, African Butterfly Fish have specific care needs, particularly regarding tank setup and feeding. They are best suited for aquarists with some experience in maintaining unique or predatory species. Water Parameters: To keep African Butterfly Fish healthy, maintain water temperatures between 75-82°F (24-28°C), a pH of 6.0-7.5, and soft to moderately hard water (4-12 dGH). A calm tank with little water movement, floating plants for cover, and secure tank lids (as they are jumpers) is essential to replicate their natural environment.
