African Lungfish Protopterus Annectens 20cm Overview: The African Lungfish, scientifically known as Protopterus annectens, is a fascinating and prehistoric fish that captivates aquarists with its unique appearance and incredible adaptability. This species is known for its elongated body, small limbs, and the remarkable ability to breathe air using a primitive lung, a rare trait among fish. Reaching up to a meter in length in the wild, they are generally smaller in captivity but still require ample space to thrive. Origin: Native to the freshwater environments of Africa, the African Lungfish dwells in rivers, swamps, and temporary pools that dry up during the dry season. It is during these times that the lungfish demonstrates its extraordinary survival technique by burrowing into the mud and entering a state of estivation until the water returns. Feeding: In captivity, the African Lungfish's diet should mimic its natural feeding habits, consisting of live or frozen prey such as bloodworms, earthworms, and small fish. They are opportunistic feeders and can adapt to eating pellets formulated for carnivorous species. Regular feeding schedules and varied diet help in maintaining their health and vitality. Tank Mates: Due to their size and feeding habits, careful consideration is required when selecting tank mates for the African Lungfish. They are best kept with larger, peaceful fish that do not fit into their mouths. Small fish are likely to be seen as prey. It is essential to monitor interactions in the aquarium to ensure a harmonious environment. Aggression: The African Lungfish is generally a solitary and peaceful species but can exhibit aggression towards smaller fish or those it perceives as a threat. Providing plenty of space and hiding spots can help mitigate aggressive behavior. Experience Level: Caring for an African Lungfish is best suited for intermediate to advanced aquarists. Their unique care requirements, large tank needs, and long lifespan demand commitment and understanding of their specific needs. Water Parameters:- Temperature: 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C)
