African Tetra (Alestes brycinus longipinnis)

Overview

The African Tetra is a large, schooling freshwater fish, notable for its sleek body, elongated fins, and dynamic swimming behavior. Active and striking, it makes a lively addition to medium to large community tanks.

Origin

Native to West and Central Africa, including rivers and floodplains in countries like Nigeria, Cameroon, and the Congo Basin. Prefers clear or slightly turbid waters with moderate flow and submerged vegetation.

Feeding

Omnivorous. Accepts flakes, pellets, frozen foods (bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp), and small live foods. Benefits from a varied diet to maintain color and vitality.

Tank Mates

Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Best kept with similarly sized fish in groups. Avoid very small species that may be seen as prey.

Aggression

Low to moderate. Generally peaceful within its school but may show minor nipping if stressed or overcrowded.

Experience Level

Intermediate. Requires a spacious tank, good filtration, and stable water parameters. Thrives in schools of at least 6 individuals.
