Africanus Angelfish – Holacanthus africanus
Overview:
The Africanus Angelfish is a rare and highly sought-after marine species, displaying a bright yellow body contrasted with deep blue highlights and a distinctive face mask. Its vibrant coloration and graceful swimming make it a striking showpiece for large aquariums.
Origin:
Native to the Eastern Atlantic Ocean, particularly around the coasts of West Africa and offshore islands.
Feeding:
Omnivorous — accepts marine angelfish formulas, sponge-based foods, algae, spirulina, mysis, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood.
Tank Mates:
Best kept with large, robust marine fish such as tangs and Wrasses. Avoid housing with small, delicate species or other angelfish unless in a very large system.
Aggression:
Semi-aggressive — may be territorial with other angelfish or similarly shaped fish, but generally coexists with strong tank mates in spacious aquariums.
Experience Level:
Recommended for advanced aquarists, requiring a large, mature system and a carefully varied diet.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)
-
pH: 8.1–8.4
-
Salinity: 1.020–1.025
-
Minimum Tank Size: 180+ gallons
Rare and dazzling, the Africanus Angelfish is an exceptional centerpiece for experienced marine keepers with large aquariums.
