Help and advice on shopping for: Aquarium Ornaments

Design a unique and eye-catching aquascape

Aquarium ornaments can be just the thing to brighten up your fish tank and add a fun touch. Whether you want a sunken galleon for a children’s tank or a natural-looking cave for shy fish, there is a style to suit every aquarium.

What are aquarium ornaments?

Aquarium ornaments are decorative pieces that add depth and colour to your tank. They are made from a range of materials: some are designed to be funny, some blend in naturally and others are simply eye-catching. A few are designed to hide aquarium hardware such as a filter or air pump, and some move with the bubbles from an aquarium air pump.

Why should I buy aquarium ornaments?

Watching fish dive in and out of ornaments is one of the pleasures of fishkeeping, and the ornaments give them places to explore. Caves and hides also give shy and bottom-dwelling fish, such as loaches, somewhere to retreat and feel secure, and they can break up the view across the tank.

What are the main types of aquarium ornaments?

  • Caves and hides: rock, resin and log caves, hollow bark and hideaways for shy fish and bottom-dwellers
  • Themed ornaments: shipwrecks, sunken treasure, vehicles, divers’ helmets and other characters, popular in children’s tanks
  • Statues: sculpted faces and figures for a more dramatic or Asian-inspired scape
  • Natural-look pieces: logs, roots and mossy rocks that blend in with plants. For more natural materials, see our aquarium hardscape
  • Shrimp and betta ornaments: tubes, houses, floating and sinking logs sized for small inhabitants
  • Air-powered and floating ornaments: pieces that release bubbles from an air pump, and floating islands and platforms

What should I look for?

Check what the ornament is made from, as some materials, such as certain rocks and shells, can change the pH and hardness of your water. If you need to adjust your water, browse our water treatments, and remember to treat new tap water with a dechlorinator. Choose an ornament in proportion to your tank, with smooth edges and openings big enough for your fish to pass through without getting stuck.

How do I keep ornaments looking good?

Algae and debris build up on all ornaments over time. Our guide How To Clean Aquarium Ornaments explains how to freshen them safely.

What else will I need?

Ornaments look best alongside plants, a suitable aquarium substrate and an aquarium background. If you are planning a complete layout, take a look at our aquascaping kits, or browse all of our aquarium decor.
