Origin

Endemic to Lake Malawi, East Africa. Prefers rocky habitats with sandy areas and moderate water flow.

Feeding

Omnivorous and thrives on a varied diet:

• High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes

• Frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis, or krill

• Occasional live foods

• Primarily protein-based diet; avoid excessive plant matter

Tank Mates

Peaceful for a Malawi cichlid, best kept with:

• Other Peacock cichlids (Aulonocara spp.)

• Non-aggressive Haplochromine cichlids
  Avoid: Aggressive Mbuna or very small fish.

Aggression

Low to moderate. Males may show territorial behavior during breeding but are generally less aggressive than rock-dwelling Mbuna.

Experience Level

Intermediate. Hardy but benefits from stable water parameters, proper diet, and sufficient space for swimming and territory.

• Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C)

• pH: 7.8–8.6

• Hardness: 10–20 dGH

• Notes: Provide rocky caves, sandy patches, and open swimming areas. Regular water changes and high water quality are essential to maintain vibrant coloration.
