Banded Butterfly Fish – Chaetodon striatus
Overview:
The Banded Butterfly Fish is a striking reef species, easily recognized by its silver-white body with bold black vertical bands and a prominent eyespot near the tail. Its elegant swimming and classic butterflyfish pattern make it a captivating centerpiece in marine aquariums.
Origin:
Native to the Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean, Florida Keys, and northern South America.
Feeding:
Omnivorous – in the wild, it feeds on coral polyps, small invertebrates, and algae. In captivity, provide frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine flakes or pellets.
Tank Mates:
Best housed with peaceful community fish. Not reef safe, as it may feed on corals or sessile invertebrates.
Aggression:
Peaceful, though may exhibit mild territorial behavior toward other butterflyfish in smaller tanks.
Experience Level:
Intermediate aquarists – requires stable water conditions and a varied diet.
