Barred Fin Moray Eel – Gymnothorax zonipectis
Overview:
The Barred Fin Moray Eel is a medium-sized marine eel distinguished by its dark vertical bars along a light body and prominent fin structure. Its secretive, crevice-dwelling behavior combined with occasional bursts of activity make it a fascinating and dynamic addition to large marine aquariums.
Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, commonly found in coral reefs and rocky areas from Indonesia to the Philippines and northern Australia.
Feeding:
Carnivorous – feeds on small fish, shrimp, and meaty marine foods. In captivity, provide live or frozen shrimp, small fish, and chopped seafood.
Tank Mates:
Best housed with larger, non-aggressive species. Avoid small fish or invertebrates that may be treated as prey. Suitable for species-specific or carefully planned community tanks.
Aggression:
Semi-aggressive/predatory – generally peaceful with larger tank mates but may hunt smaller animals.
Experience Level:
Advanced – requires a well-established aquarium with secure rockwork, hiding spots, and plenty of swimming space.
