Black Fin Cory (Corydoras leucomelas)

Overview

The Black Fin Cory is a striking and hardy Corydoras species known for its bold black dorsal fin, speckled body pattern, and lively schooling behavior. Peaceful, active, and full of personality, it makes an excellent addition to community and planted aquariums.

Origin

Native to the upper Amazon Basin in Peru, typically found in slow-moving, soft-water habitats with sandy substrates and abundant leaf litter.

Feeding

Omnivorous and easy to feed:

• Sinking micro-pellets and Cory wafers

• Frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, cyclops, and brine shrimp

• Occasional live foods for conditioning
  Tip: Provide sinking foods, as Corydoras feed primarily at the bottom.

Tank Mates

Perfect for peaceful community tanks with:

• Small tetras and rasboras

• Dwarf cichlids (Apistogramma, Rams)

• Peaceful livebearers

• Other Corydoras species

• Small, gentle loaches

Avoid: Large or aggressive fish that may intimidate or outcompete them.

Aggression

Very low. A schooling species that thrives in groups of 6 or more, helping them feel secure and display natural activity.

Experience Level

Beginner to Intermediate. Hardy and adaptable, but appreciates high water quality and a soft substrate to protect delicate barbels.

Water Parameters

• Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C)

• pH: 6.0–7.4

• Hardness: 2–15 dGH

• Notes: Provide fine sand, gentle flow, hiding spots, and good oxygenation.
