Details
Black Leopard Wrasse Macropharyngodon Negrosensis The Black Leopard Wrasse, also known as the Yellowspotted Wrasse, is recognized by its dark body with light blue to yellowish spots and black and white diagonal stripes on the dorsal fin. It may have red highlights on the tail and head. This species originates from the Indo-Pacific region. Upon introduction to a reef setup, it may initially hide in the sand but typically becomes a peaceful tank inhabitant after acclimation. It is recommended to keep this species in a 90-gallon or larger aquarium with well-established live rock and a layer of live sand.

Feeding Habits

The Black Leopard Wrasse is a carnivorous fish that feeds on small invertebrates such as foraminiferans and amphiopods growing on live rock. Its diet should include vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp, frozen brine shrimp, and other meaty foods along with high-quality marine flake and marine pellet food.

Suitable Tank Mates and Aggression Level

This species should be introduced in groups of three or more and is generally peaceful with other tank mates. It is important to note that due to potential aggression, it's best not to mix the Black Leopard Wrasse with other species of the Macropharyngodon genus. If combined with other genera, it's advisable to add this species last.

Recommended Experience Level and Water Parameters

The Black Leopard Wrasse is designated as "Expert Only" due to the increased level of care it requires. It is recommended for expert aquarists, zoos, or research institutions. The optimal water conditions for this species include a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, temperature between 72-78°F, dKH of 8-12, and a pH of 8.1-8.4.
