Black Paradise Fish (Macropodus opercularis) – Store Description

Overview

The Black Paradise Fish is a striking freshwater labyrinth fish, known for its jet-black body, flowing fins, and hardy nature. Intelligent and visually dramatic, it adds elegance and personality to community and species-specific aquariums.

Origin

Native to Southeast Asia, including China, Vietnam, and Taiwan. Inhabits slow-moving rivers, ponds, and rice paddies with dense vegetation and calm waters.

Feeding

Omnivorous. Accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods (bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp), and small live foods. Regular feeding encourages natural hunting behavior and maintains vibrant health.

Tank Mates

Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust, non-fin-nipping species or in a species-specific setup. Avoid long-finned or very passive fish.

Aggression

Moderate. Males are territorial, especially in smaller tanks. Can be aggressive toward conspecifics outside breeding pairs. Providing hiding spots helps reduce tension.

Experience Level

Intermediate. Hardy but requires careful attention to tank mates, water quality, and tank space for territorial behavior.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 70°F – 82°F (21°C – 28°C)

  • pH: 6.0 – 8.0

  • Hardness: 5 – 15 dGH

  • Notes: Provide dense plants, driftwood, and caves; a low to moderate water flow mimics natural habitat.

Elegant, hardy, and captivating, the Black Paradise Fish (Macropodus opercularis) is perfect for aquarists seeking a dramatic and interactive freshwater species for either community or species-specific tanks.
