Blue Carpet Anemone (Stichodactyla haddoni)

Overview

The Blue Carpet Anemone, scientifically known as Stichodactyla haddoni, is a stunning large host anemone admired for its vibrant colour forms—most famously brilliant blue, but also found in green, red, or tan. It has a broad, carpet-like oral disc covered in short tentacles that can reach up to 50 cm (20 inches) in diameter. This species is both beautiful and demanding, making it suitable only for dedicated marine aquarists who can meet its needs.

Origin

Found throughout the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, Maldives, Fiji, and Australia. It typically inhabits sandy bottoms and lagoonal reef flats, often partially buried with only its oral disc visible.

Feeding

The Blue Carpet Anemone is a carnivore that relies on both photosynthesis (via its symbiotic zooxanthellae) and direct feeding. In captivity, it should be fed:

  • Meaty marine foods such as shrimp, fish, squid, or mussels

  • Occasional pellet or frozen reef foods
Feeding 1–2 times per week is recommended to support growth and health.

Tank Mates

Best kept in a species-specific or carefully planned reef setup. Compatible with:

  • Clownfish species (especially Clarkii, Saddleback, and Tomato Clowns, which naturally associate with this anemone)

  • Large, peaceful reef fish that won’t nip its tentacles

Avoid mixing with other anemones, corals, or aggressive fish, as they may sting or outcompete each other.

Aggression

Highly aggressive in terms of territory. Its sticky tentacles deliver a strong sting capable of injuring or killing fish, corals, or inverts that come too close. It requires significant space in the aquarium and should not be placed near other sessile invertebrates.

Experience Level

Advanced. Carpet anemones are not recommended for beginners due to their demanding water quality needs, strong lighting requirements, and potential to harm other tank inhabitants. They also need a mature, stable aquarium (at least 6–12 months established).

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG

  • Lighting: High-intensity lighting (LED, T5, or metal halide)

  • Flow: Low to moderate, as they prefer gentle currents

  • Tank Size: Minimum 75 gallons (280L), though larger is strongly recommended

Provide a deep sandy substrate so it can bury its foot securely, along with stable rockwork to protect its base.
