Blue Spot Leopard Wrasse (Macropharyngodon cyanoguttatus)

Overview

The Blue Spot Leopard Wrasse is a stunning reef-safe species admired for its intricate pattern of iridescent blue spots across a green to brown body. Peaceful and active, this Wrasse brings elegance and constant motion to reef aquariums while helping control small invertebrate pests.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific, including Indonesia and the Great Barrier Reef, Macropharyngodon cyanoguttatus inhabits sandy reef slopes and rubble zones, often burrowing in sand for rest or protection.

Feeding

An omnivore that thrives on frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Supplement with live rock to encourage natural foraging for small crustaceans and worms. Feed 2–3 times daily.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and reef-safe, making it ideal for community aquariums with gobies, tangs, anthias, and other small, non-aggressive fish. Avoid overly aggressive or territorial tank mates.

Aggression

Peaceful. Rarely aggressive, though males may display mild territorial behavior toward other Wrasses in smaller systems.

Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists. Requires a mature, stable reef aquarium with a fine sand bed for burrowing and abundant live rock for foraging.
