Blue Star Coral Polyp (Anthella sp.)
Overview:
The Blue Star Coral Polyp is a soft coral prized for its delicate, tree-like stalks topped with star-shaped blue polyps. Its gentle swaying in the current and subtle coloration provide a unique contrast to brighter corals, making it a graceful addition to reef aquariums.
Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific, often found in shallow reef zones attached to rubble or rocky substrates.
Feeding:
Primarily photosynthetic, relying on symbiotic zooxanthellae for energy. Benefits from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton, marine snow, or other micro-sized coral foods to encourage healthy growth.
Tank Mates:
Reef-safe and compatible with peaceful fish and invertebrates. Should be placed away from aggressive or stinging corals to avoid damage to its delicate polyps.
Aggression:
Non-aggressive. Does not overgrow aggressively like Green Star Polyps, making it easier to manage in mixed reefs.
Experience Level:
Beginner to intermediate. Relatively hardy but prefers stable reef conditions. Thrives under moderate lighting, gentle to moderate water flow, and consistent water parameters.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 72–78°F (22–25.5°C)
-
pH: 8.1–8.4
-
Salinity: 1.023–1.025
-
dKH: 8–12
