Overview:
The Brazilian Armoured Catfish (Harttia punctata) is a rare and elegant loricariid (armour-plated catfish) known for its streamlined body, subtle spotted pattern, and peaceful, bottom-dwelling behavior. With its flattened profile, extended pectoral fins, and light-to-dark speckling, this species is a superb addition to South American biotope tanksor aquariums with gentle water flow and natural decor.
Origin:
Endemic to Brazil, H. punctata inhabits clear, fast-flowing freshwater rivers and tributaries, particularly in the upper Rio Tocantins Basin. It prefers sandy or rocky substrates with plenty of driftwood and submerged structures.
Feeding:
A benthic grazer, this catfish feeds on biofilm, algae, and detritus in the wild. In the aquarium, offer a mix of algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables (like zucchini or spinach), and occasional protein-rich treats such as bloodworms or shrimp pellets. A well-established tank with natural surfaces to graze is ideal.
Tank Mates:
Very peaceful and shy, it does well with non-aggressive community fish such as tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and Corydoras. Avoid boisterous or territorial species that may outcompete it for food or stress it.
