Bumble Bee Shrimp (Gnathophyllum americanum)
Overview:
The Bumble Bee Shrimp is a small, strikingly patterned reef shrimp, easily recognized by its bold black and yellow bands. Active and visually captivating, it is often associated with predation on small invertebrates like starfish and offers a fascinating addition to mature marine aquariums.
Origin:
Native to the Western Atlantic and Caribbean, commonly found on coral reefs and sandy or rubble substrates.
Feeding:
Carnivorous. Feeds on small invertebrates, particularly starfish, as well as detritus. In captivity, requires a steady supply of suitable live or frozen foods to thrive.
Tank Mates:
Reef-safe with fish and invertebrates that it cannot prey upon. Avoid housing with small starfish or other invertebrates it may target.
Aggression:
Non-aggressive toward fish, but may prey on small invertebrates.
Experience Level:
Advanced. Requires a mature, well-established reef tank with stable water parameters and appropriate live food for a proper diet.
