Caribbean Reef Tang – Acanthurus chirurgus
Overview:
The Caribbean Reef Tang is a large, peaceful marine herbivore, recognized for its silver-gray body with subtle blue highlights and a sharp, distinctive scalpel-like spine near the tail. Its graceful swimming and active grazing make it a valuable addition to large reef aquariums.
Origin:
Native to the Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, inhabiting coral reefs and coastal lagoons.
Feeding:
Primarily herbivorous – thrives on marine algae, seaweed, and spirulina-based foods, supplemented with occasional meaty foods like mysis shrimp for balanced nutrition. Regular feeding supports vibrant coloration and digestive health.
Tank Mates:
Suitable for peaceful to semi-aggressive tank mates. Can coexist with other tangs if the aquarium is spacious enough to reduce territorial disputes.
Aggression:
Mildly territorial – may defend feeding areas, but generally peaceful in mature aquariums with adequate space.
Experience Level:
Intermediate aquarists – requires a large, mature aquarium with stable water conditions and plenty of swimming space.
